Hydrotherapy

Milton Keynes’ Leading Centre for Canine Hydrotherapy.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Canine hydrotherapy is a type of non-weight bearing exercise that utilises the essential properties of water to aid in rehabilitation.

This method significantly reduces joint pressure and promotes an enhanced range of motion by utilising the natural advantages of water.

What Are The Key Water Properties And What Do They Mean?

Buoyancy

Buoyancy refers to the upward force that water exerts on an object when it is submerged, which decreases the weight borne by the limbs, thereby facilitating easier movement.

Hydrostatic Pressure

A type of pressure exerted on the body when immersed in water, which helps to decrease swelling and inflammation.

Specific Gravity

The relationship between body weight and water density enhances buoyancy.

Resistance

The resistance encountered in water is higher than that experienced while walking on land. This acts as a cushion for submerged limbs, making movements more challenging, which in turn aids in building muscle mass.

Temperature

The temperature of the pool is maintained between 28-30 degrees Celsius to ensure the water's warmth aids in decreasing swelling and inflammation. This optimal temperature range also promotes increased blood circulation and muscle relaxation.
